Reading Response 2 -- Utopia/Heterotopia

A hererotopia is a space that is both physical and mental, and that is not only the space but what the space means and signifies; it is a world inside a world. The heterotopia I thought of is a museum. For example, the museum of natural history is a heterotopia. Museums are like different worlds in the real world, they have a specific theme, history, and purpose. The museum contains different floors with multiple cubicles where animals (most of them real and previously taxidermied) are showcased, among other things like plants and natural samples. Time definitely plays an important role in making museums a kind of heterotopia. Without time, a museum is not a museum, it is simply a place that contains things inside of it, like your house or your car. With time, spaces take on meaning and history. Time is what makes museums be museums, and what makes them feel like worlds of their own. Without time, no space has significance or meaning, and therefore every place would lack purpose.
