Studio Project 1 - Artist Inspiration

Artist: Shuturp ( Ellie Hopley )

Bio: Ellie Hopley is a 28-year-old Australian artist and musician. She is the artist behind the humorous and very real Instagram art account Shuturp. Ellie did not go to university and, instead, supported herself by working on day jobs that paid very little money. She struggled with mental health and eating disorders; and used art as a way to cope and express herself. She never thought of being an artist, but in 2015 she noticed her work was getting attention, and she decided to make an Instagram account for her art and what would later become her company (where she sells clothes and other merchandise with her art on it).

Hopley says she tries to be as raw as she can with her artwork and to avoid forcing anything; "My main influence in how I feel or situations that I find myself in. I try to be super relatable and honest". She is inspired by the struggles we face as humans in our daily lives and how that is something that the public (and her followers) want to find and relate to, especially on such clouded and fake platforms like Instagram and other social media.
